My Calgary International Film Festival Top 5

September 22, 2020

Fall has arrived and so has one of my favourite festivals; The Calgary International Film Festival!

Now COVID may have brought down its illustrious Gala for the year, but it hasn’t stopped the films from being shown!

This year, smaller numbers will distance and gather in the theatres while others will cozy up in the comfort of their own home to enjoy the festival!

For me, I’ve prepared my list and I’ll be doing a mix of both!

To help get started on your list, I thought I’d share my Top 5 festival flicks I won’t be missing!

Be sure to check them out!

Shorts Package: LUV & LOL’s

*online and in cinema

Festival Shorts are always on the top of my list.

10 films with runtimes typically between 5-15 by minutes, this is a great way to be noncommittal like myself.

Jasmine Road

*online and in cinema

Shot entirely in Alberta, this will be the World Premier for Jasmine Road. This is a timely film that shares the beauty of culture and love and the forces that work against its survival.

There’s No Place Like This Place, Anyplace

*online and in cinema

In Fall of 2016 I found myself in Toronto at Honest Ed’s during its last few days.

This film explores gentrification through the closing of one of the city’s famed retailers which played a large part in many people’s lives.

Dark Cloud

*online and in cinema

I live online and it’s not always sunshine and lollipops.

As young people continue to envelop themselves it’s important to share the reality and dark side of online. Dark Cloud examines a growing epidemic affecting the lives of young people: the toll of cyberbullies, online trolls, and digital antagonism.

Ammonite

*in cinema only

Kate Winslet & Saoirse Ronan… need I say more?

Palaeontology, Personal Tragedy, Passion and a sordid Love Affair, all set along side a stunning English Coastline.

I hope you enjoy my film picks for this years Calgary International Film Festival!
