AGO’s Studio 54: Night Magic x Shiseido

March 6, 2021
Shiseido Studio54: Night Magic collection

Disco, baby. So much more than music – it was a whole scene and nowhere epitomized the disco aesthetic more than New York City’s infamous, Studio 54.

Studio 54 defined this era and moment in culture, it was a night club at its core – but so much more than that. It was a cultural movement, the place to see and be seen, a meeting place, a collision of different worlds. Most of all it was a democratic place for all races, faces, and identities to gather and celebrate. Dancing the night away.

Studio 54 and its aesthetic is now categorized as ‘night dressing’. Chic and sleek, larger than life. Flamboyant, fantastic and full of freedom.

This moment in time has always engaged my curiosity – when I think about another time I’d like to be alive in…oh to be in that club with the likes of Jerry Hall, Cher, and Andy Warhol. The fashion! The fabulousness!

So when I heard Toronto, AGO had the Studio 54: Night Magic exhibit coming – I was so excited. Opening soon, this exhibit takes you on a journey through how this nightclub, around for just three short years, became theglobal epicentre of music, fashion, and design‘ through a chronological look at photos, films, and infamous outfits worn by fashion trailblazers. Highlighting voices and people who deserve more attention for the impact they made.

To celebrate the launch of this exciting exhibit, Shiseido, as a supporting sponsor of the exhibit, has launched a new collection. All inspired by this era; this magical club. Colours and textures that embrace what Studio 54 stood for – exuberance, movement, and glam.

The Shiseido Studio 54 collection embraces this energy and overall feeling with these new releases.

Shiseido Synchro Skin Radiant Lifting Foundation | $60

Shiseido Synchro skin radiant lifting foundation

Wanting to re-imagine how performance products feel on the skin, this foundation would have been the perfect complement to Studio 54 where so much of the magic was about the lights. Diffusing the light so it bounces off the skin, it also reflects light so the skin look flawless and lifted.

With 24-hour hydration this foundation (that comes in 30 shades!) really lasts but does not dry the skin out or feel cakey or heavy. I love this foundation because a little goes a long way and you can layer it under your eyes or areas where you desire more of a concealed effect.

Shiseido Synchro Skin Soft Blurring Primer | $45

Shiseido Synchro skin Soft blurring Primer

As part of the Spring Summer 2021 collection, this Synchro Skin Soft Blurring primer is weightless and water-based. It syncs with all skin tones to refine the appearance of pores while blurring imperfections. With mattifying peptides, this helps decrease sebum production which helps extend the life of your foundation throughout the day (and night).

I like this very unique cream to powder formula that scatters light, conceals unevenness, and helps prep the skin for a flawless application of foundation.

Shiseido Kajal InkArtist | $34

This multipurpose liner can transition your look from defined to smudged out, effortlessly. You can use it inside our outside of the eye, apply it precisely and deliberately or have some fun with the ultimate smoked out look. The built-in sponge tip acts like a great blending tool.

Shisedo Minimalist WhippedPowder Blush in ‘Sayoko’ | $40

shiseido whippedpowder blush sayoko

The name of this Shiseido WhippedPowder blush, ‘Sayoko’ was chosen as Sayoko was the first Shiseido makeup artist. Based on that historical reference, this blush’s colour is reminiscent of the late 70s. And its lightweight, blendable texture is effortless. If you are feeling Jerry Hall and want to try ‘draping’, this blush is perfect for that effect – simply blend it, using your fingers, sponge, or brush from the cheek up to the corner of the eye.

Shiseido Aura Dew in ‘Lunar’ | $38

shiseido aura dew Lunar

This product is a show stopper. The type of product I can’t wait to put all over my body when we return to the public eye. It is described as an illuminating products for the face, eyes, cheeks or lips…but I am also thinking shoulders, chest and tops of my feet.

It is beyond lightweight, it gives a gorgeous sparkling glow – like light dancing off your skin. It’s so enchanting and I think you should all buy it.

Shiseido LacquerInk LipShine (in 12 shades) | $35

Shiseido lacquerInk lipShine

This product’s colour range and texture is heavily influence by disco – it’s like having vinyl on your lips. Like wearing those tight pleather pants right on the kisser. The shades all bring attention to the eyes, which is really what that disco aesthetic was about.

I like the unique and precise applicator and the texture of this lip shine. It has a blend of oils that provide a great balance between shine and comfort. I don’t know about you – but normally when I think high shine on the lips…I think sticky. Remember ‘the fly’? (have a read for a good chuckle). Venus Flytrap lips, no more!

Thanks for reading, friends. It’s such a great collaboration and I wish all partners great success.
