How-To Highlight | A Beginner’s Guide

Did you read my story yesterday and you’re keen to incorporate highlighting into your beauty routine? Well, here is a quick ‘How-to Highlight’ so you look like a dewy goddess, not a human disco ball.

Step One:

Select a highlighting product that contains no glitter. Highlighting is not like it was back in your club days;) Today’s products are creamy, dreamy and blend in – giving you that ‘lit from within’ look. Here are my favourite drugstore highlighters. As a general rule – if you have drier skin – opt for a liquid or cream highlighter.

Step Two:

Select an applicator. There are many ways to apply highlighter, I recommend three:

  • Your index finger. The heat of your finger helps to melt the product into your skin and the soft touch of the index finger won’t pull at the product rather tap it lightly into your skin

  • A dampened beauty blender. I love a damp beauty blender for working in products when you want to achieve a more natural look. Always run your blender under water then give it a good squeeze first – if you skip this step, your blender will soak up too much product and won’t leave you the flawless finish you’re after. I like this Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge as it has one flat side that helps you target the angles of your face.

  • A medium-sized Artis brush – like their Artis Fluenta Oval 4. I can’t get enough of these award-winning Artis brushes.

They are designed to mimic the way your fingers apply product and give you a flawless finish with little effort. Because their bristles are so tightly packed together, the brushes don’t pull at your skin and streak your make-up. They almost feel like they are gliding over your skin, leaving behind a finish that looks incredibly blended and natural.

Step Three:

Know where to apply the highlighter to your face.

Here is a handy diagram (of me) showing you the best locations to add a little dewy pop of radiance. The white lines indicate where best to apply the highlighter, for everyday wear. You can also J-Lo yourself up by adding some to your collarbones and shoulders 🙂
