As a kid, I was infatuated with local fairs and small town carnivals. Beyond the games and rides, I was fixated on the Pie Contests.
Watching the panel of esteemed judges, wishing and hoping that one day I’d be the one sampling and awarding the big blue ribbon.
Then I moved to a large city (Calgary) and my small town pie contest dreams were dashed… UNTIL NOW!
Today I was invited to the Calgary Farmers’ Market, to sit as a judge, during their Thanksgiving Pie Bake Off!
This year 5 contestants brought their best and it was my job, along side 3 other judges (Julie, Bernice & Sylvia), to award the trophy!
Here’s what we dug into:
#1 Maple Pumpkin Pie – Taste of Quebec
#2 Wild Turkey Chocolate Pecan Pie – Big T’s
#3 Rhu-Berry Pie – Innisfail Growers
#4 Saskatoon Pie – Yum Bakery
#5 Apple Berry Mongolian Yak Cheese Pie – Simple Simon Pies
Now I can’t tell you yet which pie reigned victorious (the Calgary Farmers’ Market will be announcing that tomorrow) but based on my leftovers you can get a sense of my personal favorite.
But the competition is not over.
Tomorrow, Saturday September 29th, between 11am-2pm at the Calgary Farmers’ Market you can sample the pies and help pick a Fan Favourite winner.
Make a small donation to the Food Bank (suggested $5) and you’ll get to taste and vote on who YOU think should win.
So try them out and let’s see how you compare to the judges.
Happy Pie Eating!
