Welcome back to my ‘Let’s Talk’ series: A series where I answer all your top questions around trending (and confusing) skin care and beauty products. Like Hyaluronic Acid! What the heck is this stuff?!
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
“Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring in connective tissue throughout our bodies, with 50 percent of it being found in our skin,” says Beauty by the Geeks. It has an important role in retaining moisture, as one molecule alone can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water.
As we age our body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid slows down so beauty brands are adding this into serums and creams with wild abandon. Who doesn’t want extra help in the moisture department…especially during Canadian winters!?
What does Hyaluronic Acid do to my skin?
Essentially, it adds moisture to your skin. It is a moisture-binding agent and helps keep your skin hydrate and plump.
What are the key benefits of using Hyaluronic Acid in my skin care routine?
- It hydrates dry skin. Hydrated skin is plumper, firmer and looks radiant in comparison to dry skin.
- It helps reduce the look of wrinkles due to plumping out the skin.
Here are my favourite products available in Canada that contain Hyaluronic Acid:
The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
This controversial brand’s price point is right and I like the addition of B5 into the mix and the fact the hyaluronic acid is vegan. I like how fast this serum sinks into my skin and it sits beautifully under my foundation. It contains three sizes of acid molecules, so it is really able to soak into the layers of your skin. I use it twice a day as a serum, under my moisturizer and sunscreen.
Vichy’s Mineral 89 Fortifying & Hydrating Daily Skin Booster With Hyaluronic Acid
I recently started using (and loving) Vichy’s Minéral 89. This is a gel-like formula that combines the power of high-dose Vichy Mineralizing Thermal Water with hyaluronic acid to strengthen skin’s barrier function while adding a boost of moisture to the skin. I love how gentle it is, so gentle you can use it on your lips! Used twice a day, I am using this under my serum.
