Recently turning the big 4-0 I wanted to ensure I was taking the very best care of my skin as I possibly could be. With age, skin needs change while the lack of sunscreen in your 20s catches up….
I was referred to 1Clinic here in Toronto. Recently opening her clinic in November, I was excited to learn what I could be doing differently and what products and services I could try to look and feel my best. 1Clinic is a centralized healthcare centre ‘designed for patient’s needs, comfort and convenience in mind’. Its whole ethos is ‘working together to prevent’…so I was totally into it! They also carry the SkinCeuticals brand of skin care – a brand I have recently starting using, so I was excited to learn more about it.
Now, I take CARE of my skin. I have a full routine that I never skip out on, no matter how late I go to bed or how early I get up. I make it a priority. But, we all made uneducated mistakes in our youth…I rarely wore sunscreen and felt like hats ruined my hair game.
That has all changed the past decade of my life, but there are still those days where I get too much sun and can really see the sun damage started to crop up on the top of my cheekbones and forehead, plus I feel like my 9-5 job is taking a toll on my skin. Sitting in front of a computer all day can wreak havoc.
Walking into the clinic, you definitely don’t feel like this is a regular doctor’s office. It feels like a posh spa complete with chic furniture, cucumber lemon water, and great tunes. Not an outdated magazine in sight! You can check out the clinic here in this video by Indigo Events.
First, we chatted about skin care and how to ensure you are staying on top of your skin care game.
Top Tips:
Hydrate!
Sunscreen (everyday)
Facials every 4-6 months (helps to remove dead skin cells, clear our dirt and allows the skin to breath)
Easy, right?!
Next we chatted skin care fads, here’s a summary of our conversation:
Edible collagen – is that a real thing I should be doing?
Digesting and absorbing collagen into your gut is not where the collagen needs to go – no studies have proven edible collagen works.
Vitamin C – how do I tell which one to use?
Ensure you are using L absorbic acid (pure Vitamin C) – this prevents UVA and UVB damage.
IPL (intense pulsed light) is all the talk of women in my cohort…but, I am a wimp, will it hurt?
Downtime ranges from zero to a few days, it all depends on your skin’s sensitivity. Always do this treatment in the Fall as there is less sunlight to potentially irritate your healing skin.
Micro-needling – should I be doing this?
It is proven successful in skincare, but never do this on your own at home. People tend to over do it and this can have the reverse reaction. There is also a strong chance of infecting your skin if your microneedler isn’t sanitary.
What is your favourite SkinCeuticals product on the market right now?
The SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF because it helps decrease hyperpigmentation and acts like an antioxidant.

What products do you recommend for me – I have sensitive skin?
SkinCeuticals’ Blemish + Age Defense serum. Instead of retinol, you can use this as it helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, without the irritation retinol can cause.

What services do you recommend for me?
A little botox in my ‘11’s’ (the two expression marks in the centre of your eyebrows) to smooth out my skin and reduce the look of the wrinkles there caused by squinting at my computer screen all day
A touch of eye filler to reduce the look of dark circles
A touch of lip fillers to even out the proportion of my face (I have large eyes…and small lips:)
And I tried the Botox, Friends! Gotta say – I look fresh-faced and my make-up hasn’t gone on so smooth in a decade. I am happy I gave it a go – so many of my friends use Botox and the stigma is definitely going away and for good reason. If it makes you happy, feel confident in your skin – do it!
Thank you, 1Clinic for answering all my questions and teaching me more about SkinCeuticals!
