I was contacted by the Alberta Securities Commission with a really intriguing proposal. They had created a board game, Kajillionaire, to educate Albertans about fraud – and they wanted me to play it.
The objective: Take your life savings, hop around the board, invest smart and get ready to retire early.
As a competitive gamer, I decided to take on the challenge – this was about to be an easy win! But what I learned was that when something sounds too good to be true… it often is.
Along the way I encountered fraudulent scams and investment ‘opportunities’ that were well presented, but in the end were designed to take my money – just like a real scam!
Frauds I had never even heard of before, that if presented to me in real life, I may have actually fallen victim to.
Lucky for me, the lessons were taught to me in a game, and my loss was only fun money. The Alberta Securities Commission has created a board game that is just like the world of fraud – it draws you in, makes you think you’re going to win big and then BOOM – all your money is gone.
Alberta Securities Commission wants to protect you too from these seemingly real but very fraudulent opportunities by sharing their knowledge on how to spot them before it’s too late.
March is Fraud Prevention Month and they created this game as an educational tool to help Albertans learn about fraud and arm them with the information needed to protect themselves from investment scams.
Visit www.CheckFirst.ca to arm yourself with information about what fraud looks like and to find out the select locations across Alberta that you can play Kajillionaire.
And for those who are like me, who thought they could never fall victim to fraud, watch me below lose my ‘life savings’ in a matter of minutes as I play Kajillionaire.
