For the past few years I’ve been polling my Facebook friends, seeking advice on what makes a great Mother’s Day gift…
Some of the answers came from moms but for the most part, I got a lot of responses from panicked sons like me, who just ended up asking me the same question in return.
So, this year I decided to take a much different approach and source the facts!
Recently, my friends at Capital One shared statistics with me from a national consumer survey asking Canadian moms what they really wanted this Mother’s Day and other Canadians what they repeatedly find themselves gifting; so this year, based off those results, I’ve compiled my top gift ideas that are sure to impress!
My list will be up tomorrow, but for today, let me share the facts!
And for those moms who are reading this… I’d love for you to weigh in below!
Ditch the Flowers?
Capital One cardholder data revealed that purchases at florists are 5x greater on Mother’s Day than an average day of the year and survey data shows that almost half (49%) of Canadians gift flowers for Mother’s Day.
But: should we ditch the flowers since survey also shows only 2 in 5 moms (37%) actually want flowers? Get creative this Mother’s Day and consider taking a gardening or floral arrangement class to help Mom enjoy flowers all year long.
Gifting Great Eats!
According to the survey – moms are looking to eat! With over half of Canadian moms (53%) looking for a delicious dinner, only 35% of respondents are delivering the goods.
Think brunch is best? The facts reveal only 35% prefer brunch to dinner and only 19% are serving it up anyway!
Leave Mom Alone.
While we want to shower our moms with extra love, affection and attention on Mother’s Day, it turns out more than half of Canadian millennial moms surveyed (52%) would rather have alone time!
While 52% of millennial moms are looking for just ‘alone time’ a whopping 60% were more specific, saying that they would love a spa day.
…And we are really messing this one up as only 9% of us are gifting spa days and 11% of us are gifting her time alone!
So, this Mother’s Day, for those sons and daughters who don’t live at home like myself. Maybe a phone call, a spa gift certificate and a pizza delivered to mom might be our winning combinations!
If you’re not quite sold on that advice (even though the survey asked Canadian Moms what they really want), check back tomorrow where I’ll share some classic gift ideas for Mom and other new-to-market items that she’s sure to love!
As we look to celebrate mom this year, it’s important to consider a budget. There are a number of annual occasions that take place throughout the year from birthdays to Mother’s Day. Capital One encourages Canadians to be financially prepared whether building a budget on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis. Don’t abandon your financial smarts – set aside a specific amount for these celebrations to help make sure there are no surprises in your budget.
