One of my most favourite places in the world is Waskesiu Lake in Prince Albert National Park. It’s a true hidden gem, right here in Canada.
The lake is clear, filled with fish and so big that even on a busy day, it’s rare to see another boat.
You do however see loons, pelicans and wildlife around the sandy banks.
This year I went fishing twice on water that was like glass… Only catching one fish… But it’s the act, not the result that counts, right?
The Waskesiu golf course is my favourite as you can see so much incredible wildlife you forget how badly you’re playing.
Golf is super affordable here, too. On couples night, non-members pay $50 for 9 holes, dinner, a drink and cart – I mean!?
If golfing and fishing aren’t your thang, there are so many great hiking trails and canoe/kayak adventures to be had through the lake and neighbouring lakes. Who knew Saskatchewan was covered in amazing lakes, right?
For the non-outdoorsy folk, the beach is wonderful, the bakeries are plentiful and, for film buffs, they put on the Waskesiu International Film Festival each year!
From ‘roughing it’ in back-country tents to glamping it up in cottages or hotels, the National Park here also offers the super cute, and convenient for those who want to camp but not schlep all the gear around, oTENTiks.
In the summer, the weather is lovely here but it can rain and does get a little ‘buggy’ at times. If you’re planning your next summer vacation already, make sure you have proper lake gear. I love my Columbia OutDry Extreme Diamond Shell jacket (totally breathable and totally waterproof!).
But the very best part is the free show put on by the lake and sun.
The sunsets will take your breath away. Every. Single. Night.
