It was the 76th running of the $1-million Pattison Canadian International this past Sunday.
Jockeys and top-class horses flew in from all around for a chance at the big prize. This is the race best known as Secretariat’s memorable last when he blew away his opponents. So I knew I was in for a treat.
I felt like Vivian Ward, being invited by Edward Lewis to be his date for the horse races. What would Kit have to say??
Woodbine Live Racing is a massive event grounds near Pearson airport… And for me, a city girl, it was quite a trek.
The trek was more than worth it though as we were greeted with music, decorations and of course, world-class racing.
Not a betting gal (unless you count betting that you can’t go wrong spending a day in Vegas at the spa), being in a place like this could easily feel intimidating; but the staff at Woodbine is so friendly, they walked me through how to read the odds and place a bet.
A far cry from my expectation of a racetrack filled with smoke, noise and tickets flying in the air – Woodbine is a class act. The latest technology attracts a wide variety of people; from families, to couples out on date night.
The most exciting part was how close you can get to the track. The public is welcome to go down to track-level to watch the races, and there is nothing like feeling the wind in your face as the horses cross the finish line.
The whole day made me a horse-race fan, so much so that I will make the epic trek back for the legendary Queen’s Plate and Woodbine Mile event next summer. At this event you can truly channel your inner Vivian, as hats and fascinators are encouraged!
