As Calgary Pride smiles upon us, I’d like to give a special thanks to all those people who have fought to make it easier for me. The ones who have taken a stand and said… ‘We are who we are and that makes us FABULOUS!’
One of those people and a hero of mine;
Ru Paul
The worlds most famous drag queen and gay activist. The host of one of my favorite shows on TV, ‘Ru Paul’s Drag Race’; a show much like Americas Next Top Model, where drag queens compete to be the next Drag Superstar.
I was lucky enough to have met Ru in passing. I was stomping the street of NYC on one of the hottest days of summer, a blazing 2000 degrees out and my hair was all outta sorts. I rounded the corner and literally ran right into him. When I took a step back I squealed in delight.
I told him I was a big fan of his and asked if I could get a quick photo. He looked at me and said “you better work it out!” He was very nice, he asked his friend to take a photo of us. He said “We are in NYC lets find a nicer background” He dragged me into the street and his friend started taking photos like the paparazzi. After a 20 second photo shoot, we did an air kiss and parted ways.
It was a perfect New York City day: I had met a hero of mine, a person who I could never thank enough for paving the way and making it easier for the rest of us!
Happy Gay Pride!
