The Not List

#1 1Girl 5 Gays

Now I want to make this post VERY clear, I love the idea of this show and I am so grateful to MTV for producing it! I think it is so important to have shows with gays, about gays, that show who we are… full of craziness, just like the rest of the world! Very normal!

Now on this show we have a great smattering of all different types of gays:

Some are totally lovable, smart, well spoken and modest like Johnathan and Jake

Some crack you up every time you watch the show. Jaun and Santos (not pictured)

and some you can’t stand! They make you mad every time you watch the show. They are conceded, smug, and know-it-all… David

But believe it or not, that’s not what gets this show on the ‘Not List’

Heres my tangent on what does….

The fact they all live in TORONTO. All though the show listing says that a few of them are from other places, make no mistake that they all live in Toronto. I think the show suffers because of it.

For a show that wants to be welcoming, accepting, and all-encompassing of gays, you’re coming across clique-y and exclusive. The cast reminds me of a big gaggle of gays that you see at the bar and would never want to talk to.

Some questions on the show, show how closed-minded they are in regards to Canada. Of course thinking that Toronto is the greatest city in the world and in fact really not showing us a diverse group of gays.

I am so happy the show was picked up in the USA but a bit embarrassed that we are showing them such a conceded group of Torontonians.

I had written to MTV and suggested that they diversify and add some out-of-province gays to the show. They were nice enough to let me fly out to Toronto to meet with them…

How did it go?

Yikers, well I was nervous, not myself and in no reflection on MTV, I was shit, I wouldn’t have cast myself after that meeting. I was willing to fly myself down for taping and take care of my own accommodations. But the zero cost to them was not enough to over look my ‘less then award winning’ meeting. (I promise you I am really fabulous, I’ll send you some youtube clips!)

But I’ll never know what they really thought, after I spent the 8 hours flying there and back on my own dime, I was never contacted back. I sent them a message thanking them… that’s what the rest of the provinces do, thank people for their time. I felt that it was a case of, you’re not from Toronto, you’ll never be a part of our clique and that’s how I feel when I watch the show.

So I plead with you MTV 1G5G, please cast someone from outside the province on your show, Non YYZ Gay Canadians have so much to offer and share with the world!

#2 Dan Thompson

I recently received a message from a ‘fan‘ out of Toronto. Mr. Dan Thompson.

Here is what he had to say:

“ummm you do know that Toronto is the largest city in the country and as such sets the tone for everything fashion, chic and culture for Canada. Even Montreal does not have the scene Toronto does – and I know Calgary (having lived there for 10 years) can you tell me why anyone would want to brag about it. A small hick town that is constantly playing catch up with big cities.

I might suggest you aspire to or at least emulate your big sisters in Toronto – boys from Calgary (and Vancouver for that matter) have a thing or two to learn about being fabulous (ie being bitchy is not the key, being chic is)

Do yourself a favour and get out of Calgary – you will find very quickly real fabulous does not exist there – Toronto is the place to be if you really want to be in the big time”

Well Dan, I have to tell you, I have had the good fortune to travel to every province and most cities in Canada and I am proud to be living in Calgary. We have a fantastic arts scene and delicious restaurants. Our people are honest and tactful. Perhaps you could come back for a visit and take a lesson in humility. All you have done in your rant is add validity to my points about Toronto and I hardly find your comments ‘chic’. I suppose class and delusion are the same thing in your world.

#3 Britney Spears

Ohhh Brit, it’s not my fault I don’t like you, I mean I was a huge fan until you showed up in my Country and played a concert at BC Place in Vancouver. A little hazy on the details?

It was your Circus Tour, I purchased an over priced ticket to your show and you disapeared after your 2nd song refusing to return to the stage. After 20 minutes of us sitting in the dark you cited it was to ‘smokey’ and you were waiting for the air to clear. Then when you came back on stage you had a really filthy attitude and didn’t even bother moving your lips to the pre recorded music cause you were having a fit, only to storm off again all the while giving us the finger and swearing.

I don’t do classless. You can stop by and pick up your CD’s.

I just moved to Calgary from Toronto, and I want to say how much I like it here. Everyone has been so friendly and helpful and pleasant. You ask for directions, you get them with a smile, unlike Toronto, where you’ll be lucky enough to catch someone’s eye in order to ask for directions.

We’ve been exploring restaurants here, and as someone who loves to both cook and eat out, I think Calgary’s restaurants are at least on par with Toronto, if not better. Just sayin.

I’m getting off the same boat apparently as Marlene, though it would seem I just didnt clear customs until much later.

FYI Dan… Toronto is done. Though you all may try your darnedest, you’re not NYC. Day in and day out I witnessed the desperation oozing from twanks, yes twanks, on church, strutting their ginches to some bath house beat they were deeming fierce and desperately wishing they were a Chelsea queen and Church was Houston. Having just departed the Tdot 2 weeks+ ago after several great years in there, sadly Tdot, in the the final year blew chunks, both for political moves and influx of pretentious twanks thinking they are the next fashionista.

Yes even the twanks exist here but they are much cooler without their TO booster shot of queen. I’m stioked to say Dan, I am quickly warming (not in the literal sense as last night of +2′c speaks for itself) up to CGY aside from the fact one needs wheels to get anywhere here. Great public spaces and art … Cagary has mostly shed the hick’ster (cmon it was a staple at one point back in the day admit it) and replaced with what I can see as one part hypster and two parts nouveau prairie chic…

Here’s to more of Calgary unveiling itself to me like Ive experienced in the past 2 weeks… now for this party tonight at Pure Pride…. beats boys and just enough space on de dance floor… yes please!
