A Wintery Weekend in the Kawartha’s at Viamede Resort

January 25, 2017

As an Alberta-girl now living in Ontario, the thrill of being close to the water has not yet worn off.  ‘Cottage country’ is what Ontario excels at. With regions like Muskoka lakes, Georgian Bay, Algonquin Park, and the Kawartha Lakes, they are the definition of Canadiana and all a reasonable drive from Toronto.

The Kawartha’s are best known for their unspoiled wilderness – forests, wildlife and beautiful lakes.  Peppered with quaint towns like Haliburton, Bobcaygeon and Lakefield this region has something for everyone. Having recently been invited to experience the historic Viamede Resort in the Kawaratha Lakes, I couldn’t pack my bags fast enough… Even in the winter!

The century old Viamede Resort on Stony Lake is a year-round resort on 165 acres and 2,000 feet of shoreline. Comprised of farmland and waterfront views, this family, conference, wedding and pet-friendly resort offers a mixture of accommodation from individual cabins to the main lodge house.

In the summer you can swim, kayak, canoe, hike, bike, fish and explore the farm. In the winter you can cozy up in front of the fire, snowshoe, hike and swim in the indoor pool.  You can do a lot or a little, depending on the type of vacation you’re looking for.

And the food! There are three restaurants on-site, all serving delicious, locally sourced food. The Boathouse serves up classics with a great lake view. Club 1885 is where breakfast is served and is a place to relax and snack.

Mount Julian is their fine dining restaurant found in the original Inn at Mount Julian. All items served are locally-sourced with an emphasis on foraged and raised items.  I savoured their 7-course tasting menu paired with local wines, beer, spirits and cider and wanted to lick all seven plates clean.

Viamede Resort is the type of place you want to return to each season to experience the sights, sounds and tastes each season brings.
