The Colorful Art Culture of Montreal

May 13, 2015

When I try to describe Montréal to someone who has never been, the closest I can come is, “It’s a mini Berlin“.

In one day, you will hear at least 5 different languages, meet a woman clad head-to-toe in Chanel or a kilted purple-haired man, taste anything from foie gras to Portuguese chicken to latkes, admire stunning historical architecture and feel the vibrant pulse to the city. Life is everywhere! A fav that drew me? The wicked cool street art.

Here are my top 5 must see pieces!

1. Whimsical & Charming.

This larger than life graff artist granny turns every frown upside down. I dare you not to smile ;).

2. Dark & Twisted.

This piece is only a foot square, but it definitely packs a visual punch. Interesting, indeed!

3. Simply Cool.

The National Theatre School has developed some of Canada’s best theatre artists. Judging from this piece, it’s obvious to see why. Wicked!

4. Gobsmacking Size.

Featuring numerous Montreal artists, this epic black and white piece by En Masse deserves a visit as there is always another layer to discover. Seriously. SO MUCH TO SEE!

5. And, my personal favorite: Simply Beautiful.

I stumbled across this beauty about a year ago. In a back alley. Completely hidden away. And, completely gorgeous.

As you can see, la belle ville is more than simply tagging. Graffiti artists take it to the next level. To cap off the must see list is a notable mention for Montreal graffiti artist, Stikki Peaches. Broadening from the street, she recently had her pieces shown in SOHO with Station 16 Gallery.

This Top 5 is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Montréal street art. Come visit and simply look up. Your eyes will thank you for it ;).
