Craving Home

December 16, 2013

With Christmas less than 10 days away, families around the world have started to assemble.

I have a number of friends who live abroad, ones that are unable to make the long commute home for the holidays.

But when I asked “What do you miss most about home?”, surprisingly family wasn’t always at the top of the list.

So what’s takes top billing?

Simple products that are easily available in Canada but are seemingly impossible to find in the countries they currently call home.

In a recent story I wrote for Travel + Escape, I dish on what these expats are hoping to find under their trees this Christmas.

Here’s an excerpt from my friends Kerry in Delft, and Marcus in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Holland may be home to all things cheese, but since his move eight years ago, Marcus has been on the hunt for Cheetos, Cheezies, Kraft Dinner and Cheez Whiz. “It seems that if it’s not sold in a brick, it’s not available for purchase,” he says.

As for Kerry, who lives in the countryside, she continues to ‘import’ deodorant: “I cannot find stick deodorant, only spray, and I am a Secret invisible solid girl.” And forget about holiday baking. “Puffed wheat and big bags of chocolate chips are things I miss most.”

Merry Christmas to my friends abroad!
