Ox and Angela

March 16, 2012

This week I was invited to a night of gluttony at what may already have become a Calgary institution in the food and cocktail community.

Ox and Angela

This sister restaurant to UNA Pizzeria opened it’s doors in a location which has seen many tenants. Always a fateful demise for the others, I have a strong feeling Ox and Angela wont be going anywhere.

Proudly serving Spanish Tapas, this cozy hangout is split in half;

On one side you have Ox; A more ‘masculine’ feel with the bar, wood detailing and warm lighting. On the other side, Angela, an intimately designed space with a wall of flea market frames and mirrors.

All the accents feel like they were shipped thousands of miles across the ocean on a boat.

The night was filled with great people and great food and I was able to sample some of the creations they’re most proud of for the first time.

The only downside is that the food and drink were all served in very tiny or extremely large family sized proportions, as a result I have no idea what a regular patron can expect. As such I wont list the prices but merely recommend my favourite items which I sampled that night.

Smashed Potatoes with Garlic Aoli

The seasoning on these little gems was so delicious I ended up sucking on them like a Tootsie Pop.

Salted Cod Fritters

Covered in panko crust and deep-fried, these were deliciously salty and mildly fishy, unlike anything I have tried before.

Squidy Paella

I have never had a paella before, nor do I really know what I was eating… But it had the texture of a crispy fried rice with a nice helping of prawns and squid topped with arugula and aoli.

Now for the 2 ‘Heavy Weight Champions’ of the night.

The Ox and Angela twist on the Mojito.

Made with spiced rum, brown sugar, passion fruit and grapes, this may just be the best cocktail I have ever had. Imagine a melted down, boozed up Orange Julius… I hope they sell these by the jug!

Of course no foodie event would be complete without desert and it was bestowed on us as a parting gift.

The most deliciously sugared warm and doughy Churro that I have ever tasted. Drizzled with chocolate, this tasted the way you always wished the ones at Disney World would taste like but never do.

The night of Spanish opulence was a success and as I headed home for a siesta, I came to realize why Ox and Angela is so wildly popular and highly spoke of in Calgary.

Muchas Gracias for the invite!
