Model Mondays | My Life

Roc the Runway

February 20, 2012

When I was asked to host ‘Roc the Runway’, the sold-out event put on by the African Student Association,  I thought to myself: “Sure Mr. Fab you can do this, you’ve hosted before.” But this was more than just some beautiful girls stomping the runway and to my surprise, not only a fashion show but a full-fledged ‘Showtime at the Apollo’ style variety show… If there’s one thing I can say about the parties I’ve hosted in the past, it is that they were nothing in comparison to this one!

The African culture that greeted me made me feel more welcome than I have ever felt at any event. I realized I wasn’t there to just host, I was there to participate…

After patting my weave with my co-host Sunday Omony, I was ready to hit the stage.

I was so inspired by the moves of the Amara Ijo Dancers, that when they were finished I jumped out of my seat, took my place in the middle of the crowd and tried to ‘move like Jagger’. Finishing up with a ‘booty tooch’, this gig had officially turned into more than just hosting!

As I limped off stage, sure I had thrown out my back with the ‘tooch,‘ I popped into the back to see how my models were doing.

All in fine form they were ready to serve it up with more feirceness then even Tyra could muster up! And these were no wimpy models, most of them walked in sets for 4 different designers.

Act after act and designer after designer the nearly 2.5 hour extravaganza eleganza had come to a close with swimwear by Sugar Strings, but the night was far from over. The music quickly returned and I was ready to share my dance talents with my new friends!

I quickly grabbed a breezer and got ‘low’.

Sadly after a couple of booty pops, I was out of steam and fled quicker than Cinderella when the clock struck twelve.

I can’t tell you how honored I was to celebrate Black History Month with such a great group of talented people. Many of them have come from different parts of the world, but I am so glad that they have all decided to call Calgary home!
