Wicked is Wicked in Calgary & Edmonton (with a ticket lotto!)

July 3, 2011

Lets me start with the most amazing news about the most amazing show and how I was able to see it for the second time since it opened 4 days ago.

The ticket lottery. Calgary & Edmonton is kickin’ it NYC style and offering a limited number of orchestra seats for $25 every day for every show! (approx. 20 tickets per show) These tickets are in the area where a ticket would normally cost you $149.60

Here’s how it works;

Each day, 2 hours prior to show time people who present themselves at the Auditorium box office will have their names placed in a lottery drum and then thirty minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only.  This lottery is available only in-person at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person.  Winners must be present (with valid photo ID) when their names are called or they forfeit their tickets.

But don’t fret, if you don’t win the lotto, they may offer you the chance to buy ‘loser seats’ for $40 plus taxes. Theses are usually solo seats as they are the unsold seats throughout the theatre.

So what are you in for?

Well let me tell you this is not your typical stroll down the yellow brick road, this show makes you rethink what you thought you knew about the ‘Witches’ and ‘OZ’. It answers questions like ‘Why did the Wicked Witch want those slippers so bad?’ and ‘What ever happens to the Scarecrow?’

The story is told by a cast that, in my mind, is the best Broadway Across Canada cast that has graced the stage in Alberta.

The first show I was at, was an invite to the opening matinée on Thursday. I was treated to Laurel Harris, the understudy who played Elphaba that performance. She has a voice that was made for Broadway; strong, clear, and powerful… She left me wanting more. She had me completely wrapped around her finger when she sang ‘No Good Deed’.

Now when I originally saw this show in NYC I wasn’t a fan, but this touring cast has made me do a 180 on my broom.

WICKED began performances in Calgary on Wednesday, June 29 and will conclude Sunday, July 17. Edmonton on July 20 – August 7. Tickets available through www.ticketmaster.ca

I’ll be back my pretties!
